Computer Science Club

Computer Science Club (CSC) is a club at the University of Waterloo.

Though active since 1967, CSC never officially had a brand image, an online presence, or a significant impact within the computer science community at the university. In 2020, new leadership introduced initiatives that would address three issues.

My role was as a Graphic Designer and Design Lead โ€” I helped develop CSC's brand identity, provided creative direction for our marketing assets, and mentored designers on my team.

Role:
Design Lead

Deliverables:
Brand guidelines, Illustrations, Social Media Assets

Timeline:
January to September 2021

Branding ๐Ÿ‘พ

CSC has 3 pillars in its mission statement:

ACADEMIC๐Ÿ“š

Encourage academic learning and give course support to all computing students.

CAREER ๐Ÿ’ผ

Provide career guidance and resources to help students gain experience and knowledge for their own job search.

COMMUNITY ๐Ÿค—

Promote interpersonal relationships through community building and social events.

We wanted to create a brand identity that can reflect the tech side of computer science while making it possible to encapsulate the 3 pillars.

Meet Codey! ๐Ÿถ

We landed upon the idea of a mascot, Codey (they/them).

This idea provides the current and future team of designers with a lot of flexibility, an important factor to consider with branding.

A mascot can show emotion and interact with other visual elements that can tie back into the mission statement. The simplicity of the design also makes this visual motif scalable and replicable in future teams.

Social Media ๐Ÿ“ฒ

As previously mentioned, CSC previously had a minimal online presence.

With the introduction of our new branding, we were able to promote events and other initiatives that CSC executives had planned for the computer science and general university student audience.
